Abstract:

Pavements are the costliest components of a transport or urban infrastructure. It is necessary therefore that such projects be as cost-effective and sustainable as possible, a reguirement that can be achieved by using geosynthetics. The purpose of this work is to study the use of geosynthetics in pavementation, collecting case studies and pointing the most efficient application of these materials, covering three main aspects: maintenance of deteriorated pavements, new pavements base reinforcement and ballast reinforcement. The theoretical mechanisms according to which each material works will be presented, followed by a few laboratory and field tests, and finally cas studies illustrating the covered concepts, when possible along with results, challenges and benefits generated by the inclusion of geosynthetics. Before all the tests and case studies showed in this work, it can be stated that geosynthetics are very efficient solutions when it comes to reducing maintenance costs, and they are also easy to install and may reduce the time necessary for the execution of the project. There is some experience with geosynthetics in Brazil, even though it is still little when compared to other coutries, especially in Europe. However, these applications are expected to grow because of the many benefits presented here.
