Abstract:
Drainage systems are an important step in the design of a pavement structure, whether
for roads or airports. In particular, subsurface and groundwater drainage systems reduce the
amount of water that reaches the track structure. Several problems arising from excessive
moisture of granular layers can make the traffic lanes reduce their level of service and often
lose their usefulness. The benefit of such systems is usually not perceived in newly
constructed pavements. However, when there is the need to intervene on the structure, it often
becomes economically impractical simply by the lack of a system for subsurface drainage and
groundwater.
Based on these topics, this work makes a study of subsurface and groundwater
drainage systems. Initially it is presented a literature review, directly facing the movement of
fluids in soils, therefore, in the design of drainage layer characteristics such as effective
porosity and permeability that are crucial in the definitions of what material to use and what
thickness adopt. Laboratory and field tests are described, in order to determine these
quantities not only using empirical equations.
Once the quantities needed are defined, the step by step for the design of subsurface
and groundwater drainage systems is showed, based on the guidelines of Appendix G of the
Advisory Circular 150/5320-5C , modification 1, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA
2009).
Finally, the criteria defined previously are applied to dimension the subsurface
drainage system in a case study, using for this purpose some of the parameters of the Salgado
Filho International Airport, located in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul.
